HISTORY

The Beginnings of the Black Infant Health Practice Initaitive

In June 2007, Governor Crist appropriated $1 million dollars to the Florida Department of Health to determine factors that contribute to elevated rates of infant mortality in minority populations, and to develop strategies to address the disparity. The bill created the Black Infant Health Practice Initiative (BIHPI). Click here to see the Governor’s letter.

BIHPI EVENTS

4th Annual Countywide Baby Shower

The 4th Annual Broward Healthy Start Coalition, Inc. Shower 2 Empower successfully served over 400 expecting and new mothers and fathers, and grandparents.  We created a full day of events that included workshops, demonstrations and activities that focused on Baby Safety.  Topics were Crisis in the Crib, Drowning Prevention, Infant CPR, Shaken Baby Syndrome, Safe Sleep Practices, Car & Car Seat Safety, Fatherhood and Childbirth Education.

Attendees participated in raffles for infant car seats, play pens, and other baby items to assist them with taking care of their babies in an effort to reduce fetal and infant mortality.  Each attendee received a gift bag with diapers, wipes and resource information on maternal and child health.
